Scottish Coastal Path / Melvich

We started to look at access again as The Highland Council are revising some parts of the Core path plans. We revisited the Castle of Mey correspondence, and also a couple of matters on the north coast, one of them the footbridge at the Halladale Bridge.  We will be visiting the bridge on 3 November to look at what is required if anything, as raised by Laura Gray of the Association of Northern Trails Scotland.

There are two bridges at Dunbeath which are impassable and no one knows who owns them, according to the John o Groats Journal 4 July 2025

Proposed Core Path Diversion – Upper Bighouse SU19.03
Background
The core path SU19.03 leads from Kirkton Cemetery to Upper Bighouse, Melvich. It
follows a built track with a deep ford at one point and some gorse encroachment.
Both land owners promoted the path through Scottish Governments Land
Management Contract scheme and it was adopted into the core paths plan in
September 2011.
Since the adoption on the route into the plan the steadings at Upper Bighouse have
stopped being used for cattle and agricultural use and the buildings have been used
for the running of a biomass and timber processing facility. No planning applications
were received for the change of use and over time the area used for this new
purpose has slowly increased. Retrospective consent was granted in December
2023 with a condition that an alternative route for the core path be provided.

Issues on JOG Trail / Skirza
« Last post by TinaIrving on May 18, 2025, 08:48:24 am »
Access issues at Skirza. Farmer complaining about walkers upsetting his cows. He stated on 18 May 2025, that the group has not consulted with him at all.  Now he is having to spend money on new fencing and gates.

There are still issues, and flooding at Golspie. Have the trail developers looked at that

Issues on JOG Trail / Issues on John o Groats Trail

We started to notice that the John o Groats Trail is not all it seems.  With large chunks being missed out, and major places like Noss Head ignored, this trail is unsustainable.  We looked at Noss Head during Orca Watch. Sure enough, the landowners have not been consulted.

Durness / Durness
« Last post by TinaIrving on May 24, 2024, 02:00:05 am »
We got in touch with the ferry man at Durness.  He was not a happy bunny.  We tried to fix things for him, and hopefully the local councillor will help. Meanwhile, our magazine is going down well, thanks to Quintfall Forest.  As at 31 May 2024 the ferry man reported he is finally getting the road sorted out and the bus will be able to get down it.

However, there is still another problem at Rispond, where there is a "No Through Road - Private sign".  The Highland Council maintain that road so that sign should not be there.

Murkle / Murkle still a problem
« Last post by TinaIrving on April 23, 2024, 08:36:26 am »
Went to see the guy at the Murkle Caravan Park.  He makes sure tourists stick to the paths, but it is the surfers who are the problem.  Also went to see two landowners, both out of course lambing but left notes for them.
