Welcome+-

Welcome to the new forum for Scottish long distance paths, including those under construction and development.  We are concerned about the A9 and the safety issues the National Cycle Route north of Tain being removed by SUSTRANS due to accessibility issues.  We addressed this with The Highland Council (Jan 2024) and now we have diverted it.

This is linked from www.friendsofthenorthhighlandway.com.

The rules are the same as for the Caminos web forum.

Note the North Highland Way project is not funded. However, The Highland Council and Nature Scot have committed several tens of thousands of pounds in their time.

The route around Dounreay is the main obstacle.  We keep applying for funds to get people off the road, and keep getting turned down.  Please write to Dounreay to ask why.  Still not fixed.

We recced the whole north coast during the summer of 2024, and found several issues.  We hope to have sorted out the problem around Dounreay, at least we have passed it to one of the Councillors. A visit to the Sutherland Space Hub on 31 August 2024 raised some questions which we are working to alleviate, but the main concern is the Naver Bridge which is currently being upgraded.  We also submitted an Historic Scotland application for Huna Harbour. It belongs to The Highland Council, and we do not want them wrecking it.

It is noted that in England, landowners are responsible for facilities and infrastructure on their land.  We in Scotland are lucky to have Core Paths and the Land Reform (Scotland) Act. Private individuals do not pay for infrastructure unless it is on their land.
